Google unveils brand new video-based search feature

Hold the phone, Google has introduced a game-changing search feature that allows users to search the web through video capture.

This new function works similarly to Google Lens but takes things up a notch. With video search, users can simply point their phone’s camera at an object, ask questions aloud, and receive search results based on what they’re curious about.

To try out this futuristic-sounding feature, users need to enable the ‘AI Overviews’ setting in their Google App. The best part? It’s available on both iPhone and Android, so everyone can give it a whirl, regardless of their device preference.

As the way we search continues to evolve, Google’s adoption of AI is a big step toward making searches even more intuitive and user-friendly. Some experts also see this move as a direct response to OpenAI, creators of ChatGPT, who recently talked about introducing web browsing capabilities through asking their chatbot questions.

Google’s earlier AI search experiments

Earlier this year, Google faced significant criticism after introducing AI-generated responses to searches, which landed at the top of their results page. Some of these answers were hilariously off-the-mark, including one bizarre suggestion to glue cheese to pizza!

Fortunately, Google’s AI has come a long way since then. Over the last few months, the quality and accuracy of these AI-powered answers have improved, with far fewer errors cropping up.

How does video search actually work?

Google’s new video search tool promises to make discovering information about the world around you easier than ever. According to Liz Reid, Google’s head of search, the process is simple. For example, if someone is at an aquarium and wonders why a group of fish are clustering together, they can film the scene, ask their question out loud, and Google’s AI will analyse both the video and the question to provide a meaningful answer to satiate their curiosity.

It’s an exciting development in search technology, and we wonder where Google are going…
